UNEP Mediterranean Action Plan
In 1974, UNEP established its Regional Seas Programme with the scope of coordinating activities aimed at the protection of the marine environment through a regional approach. The Mediterranean Action Plan was the first UNEP initiative to be developed under the Programme and became the model for other seas across the globe.
The CIHEAM maintains close relations with the United Nations Environment Programme / Mediterranean Action Plan (MAP), established by the United Nations Environment Programme and approved by the Mediterranean States and the European Community as the institutional framework for cooperation in addressing common challenges of marine environment degradation.
The CIHEAM attends all the meetings organised by the MAP focal points and has collaborated, over a number of years with the Blue Plan, one of the MAP/UNEP Regional Activity Centres located in Sophia-Antipolis. The CIHEAM has contributed to the preparation of the Blue Plan report for 2025.
Representatives of the Blue Plan and MAP also attend meetings of the CIHEAM’s Governing Board.
From 2007 to 2009, the CIHEAM and the Blue Plan jointly published the Report Mediterra 2009.
