COP 28: RAISING AWARENESS ON MEDITERRANEAN AGRICULTURE CHALLENGES IN THE CONTEXT OF CLIMATE CHANGE
CoP 27 hosted a Mediterranean pavilion for the first time, providing a basis for improving regional climate action. This year for Cop 28 which is being held in Dubai, regional priorities must be reaffirmed and the visibility of the Mediterranean consolidated.
During COP 27, the CIHEAM was a partner of the Pavilion and organizer of side events highlighting pathways for more Sustainable and Inclusive Mediterranean Food Systems in the context of climate change. Continuing its presence at COP 27, the CIHEAM is involved this year in a Mediterranean coalition. The Mediterranean Coalition office is an instrument of action, networking, coordination and exchange that places the Mediterranean region in the climate decision-making arena.
It is the symbol of a unified identity, a place to bring together participating parties, build new partnerships and consolidate existing ones.

With the growing ambition of the European Green Deal and the regional development agendas to overcome current challenges related to climate change, environmental degradation and food security, policy initiatives and sustainable practices are needed to transform the Euro-Mediterranean region into a more integrated, resource-efficient and competitive economy.
Agroforestry, as a multifunctional system, could be at the centre of this transition given its potential environmental, economic and social benefits. There is a need today for a policy framework that links food systems, agriculture, forestry and rural development for a holistic approach to environmental, economic and social sustainability and to overcome the most critical barriers to agroforestry adoption in the Euro-Mediterranean region.
This session will present the latest developments and knowledge on these issues, supported by new tools and approaches. It will also make it possible to present the priority levers to be activated allowing strengthened Mediterranean cooperation in these areas.
