Driving Future Solutions for Land Degradation and Desertification Mitigation
The CIHEAM actively participates in the MONALISA Project (MONitoring and Assessing prevention and restoration soLutIons to combat deSertificAtion), an initiative dedicated to preventing and reversing Land Degradation and Desertification (LDD). As part of the consortium, the CIHEAM engages stakeholders, disseminates scientific findings, and facilitates the adoption of MONALISA’s innovative solutions among targeted audiences.
The MONALISA Project, funded under the Horizon Europe Program focuses on sustainable solutions for mitigating LDD in climate-sensitive drylands. Officially launched during the Kick-off Meeting hosted by Università degli Studi di Sassari (UNISS) in Sassari, Italy, in October 2024, it is supported by the European Research Executive Agency (REA) under the European Commission.
Led by the University of Sassari, the project brings together experts from various fields, including industry, policy, government, academia, and civil society, to develop innovative strategies for sustainable land management. The MONALISA consortium encompasses partners from eight European countries—Italy, Spain, Greece, France, Romania, Serbia, Switzerland, and Denmark—as well as Palestine and Tunisia. It integrates 13 academic and research institutions from seven countries, two public organizations from Italy and Tunisia, three NGOs from Spain, Greece, and Palestine, two civil society organizations from Italy and France, and three SMEs from Italy, Spain, and Serbia.
This diverse and interdisciplinary team ensures a comprehensive approach to tackling land degradation and desertification challenges, fostering collaborative solutions that align with European values.
