From 29 to 31 May 2024, the Permanent Representation of Italy to the International Organisations in Paris , in collaboration with the CIHEAM, the CIHEAM Bari and the Region of Puglia's Department of Agriculture, this year's Guest of Honour, celebrated Republic Day with a series of initiatives in honour of the Region of Puglia. This choice was made in particular to pay tribute to the close collaboration between the OECD and the Italian presidency of the G7, whose Summit of national leaders will be held in Apulia, in Borgo Egnazia, from 13 to 15 June.
The celebrations were inaugurated at the OECD on 30 May by Ambassador Luca Sabattucci, Permanent Representative to the International Organisations in Paris, and the Secretary General of the OECD, Mr. Mathias Cormann.
The event was marked by a guided tasting of Apulian agri-food products offered to more than 350 guests, including members of the diplomatic community and international executives. This meeting was an opportunity to discover and appreciate the rich gastronomy and oenology of Apulia.
Conference on Agri-food and Sustainable Tourism
The following day, a conference entitled "Agri-Food and Sustainable Tourism: The Example of Puglia" was organised in collaboration with the ICE Paris office, the CIHEAM and the CIHEAM Bari. It was attended by tourism experts from the OECD and numerous companies promoting local practices in Puglia. The session highlighted how agri-tourism can serve as a model for sustainable development.
Through the speeches of Mr Teodoro Miano, Secretary General, and Mr Roberto Capone, CIHEAM Focal Point for Sustainable Food Systems, the CIHEAM recalled the importance of the Mediterranean diet. Known for its nutritional benefits and low environmental impact, the Mediterranean diet is also a cultural and historical heritage that makes a significant contribution to social well-being and to reducing public expenditure on chronic diseases.
These events highlighted the commitment of CIHEAM and its partners to promoting sustainable food systems and strengthening cultural and economic ties across the Mediterranean. They also reflected the importance of international cooperation and cultural exchange in preserving and promoting beneficial food traditions.
