The Mediterranean region is facing growing environmental and socio-economic challenges that require in-depth reflection to anticipate future trajectories. The recently published report, "The Mediterranean in 2050: A Foresight Study by Plan Bleu", is a major study aimed at shedding light on regional issues and proposing prospective scenarios for sustainable development. The objective is also to raise awareness among policymakers about Mediterranean challenges, as well as to inform the wider public, especially the younger generations.
The CIHEAM contributed to this initiative by participating in foresight analysis and strategic discussions carried out in the framework the project. Omar Bessaoud and Yasmine Seghirate participated in the foresight group, while Elen Lemaitre Curri was a member of the Steering Committee. Additionally, Raúl Compés, Director of the CIHEAM Zaragoza, was interviewed as part of this study, sharing his expertise on agricultural and food dynamics in the Mediterranean.
The report presents six scenarios for 2050 and highlights key recommendations to support necessary transitions in the region, emphasising the importance of cooperation and innovation. In the coming months, meetings will be organised in several Mediterranean countries, including Morocco, Tunisia, and Croatia, to further discussions and explore strategies for action.
For over 62 years, the CIHEAM has been committed to cooperation in the Mediterranean and remains attentive to the transformative dynamics shaping the region’s future. It continues to support initiatives that promote a collective and sustainable approach to agricultural and food challenges.
